LeBaron ( Antwerp 1886 – Ostend 1952 ) was a Belgian draughtsman, painter and sculptor. Soon in his career, he evolved from impressionism to a expressionist style. He is considered one of the most important representatives of the second Latem group. His subjects: landscapes, fishermen and farmers. He wants to comprehend, through these archetypes, the psychology of the simple people. From 1937 on he also starts creating sculptures of a controlled monumentality in a mythological expression. It concerns practically solely isolated female nudes. His attention to the human emotions and experiencing nature from within, make his work universal and timeless. This human scale piece is made of terracotta, a pourous ceramic material obtained by cooking clay. Heavy !
