The Mario Botta Seconda Chair is a renowned design icon created by the Swiss architect Mario Botta in 1982. This chair is characterized by its architectural geometry, featuring a structure in lacquered steel, a seat in lacquered perforated steel sheet, and a back consisting of two black polyurethane cylindrical elements.

The Seconda chair is part of the Botta collection, which also includes the Prima chair, designed by Mario Botta for Alias. Both chairs are considered classics in the Alias catalogue and are showcased at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.

The chair retains its original labels, found beneath the cushions

About the Designer

Mario Botta is a renowned Swiss architect and designer, celebrated for his bold, geometric architectural forms and deep respect for materiality. Born in Mendrisio, Switzerland, in 1943, Botta studied at the University Institute of Architecture in Venice, where he was influenced by iconic figures such as Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn. While best known for monumental works like the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Church of San Giovanni Battista in Mogno, his foray into furniture design—such as the iconic Seconda Chair for Alias—reflects his architectural philosophy: rigorous geometry, structural clarity, and a poetic interplay between solid and void. Botta’s work, both in architecture and design, embodies a timeless modernism rooted in cultural context and craftsmanship.
